Re: A lifetime of success is within your grasp

Have you ever wondered why your life isn’t quite what you thought it could be? Have you ever looked at a more successful friend and been inwardly embarrassed because you feel resentment at their “good fortune”?

Our lives are built around learning from others. Parents, siblings, teachers, friends, and even fictional characters we either read about or see on television.
We find ourselves, after a time, “creatures of habit”, and most of our lives end up structured around the habits we’ve created and adhered to since adolescence.
Back up and read that sentence again. Carefully.
I didn’t say that successful people do not have bad habits. Nor did I say that successful people “have” good habits.
Successful people are fallible human beings, just like you and me. They struggle with vices like food, money, and sex just like many others around them.
But they create good habits to overcome the bad.
Sure, some good habits come from learned behavior as a child. Some are inherent in a person’s genetic make-up. I’m sure you have some of these, too.
The key is not “breaking the bad habits”, but replacing them with good habits. Building a strong foundation for success on habits and activity that promote success.
Consider dieting. We’re all “on a diet”, since a diet is comprised of what we eat, regardless of how healthy or unhealthy it is. If you want to lose weight, you’ll have to change your diet.
Have you ever stopped to think about what changing your diet actually means? Does it mean that you just stop eating all of the junk food, fast food, high fat food? Not really. If you just stop eating all of that, you’ll starve.
You must REPLACE that “bad” food with better food. More natural, good for you food. You see, it’s not about stopping something. Not completely. You must also fill the void left by “stopping” the junk food in order to get the nutrition your body needs.
If you really stop and think about it, the “stopping” of the bad is not as important as the “starting” of the good.
That’s why “kicking bad habits” is so hard. The focus winds up being on getting rid of something negative, which is all about willpower and denying yourself.
As a matter of fact, that’s one of many reasons you’ve struggled with “kicking your bad habits” in the past.
1. Self Depravation -
Too often the focus is on taking away the bad. Don’t get me wrong, you need to accomplish that. But focusing on the negative, constantly depriving yourself of something you are conditioned to have, can weigh on you… eventually breaking your will. Sound familiar? Think “rebound weight gain” for a dieter.
2. Momentum -
The momentum of your life is NOT in your favor. You’ve spent years repeating the same patterns of behavior. There’s a reason the Titanic sunk… it couldn’t turn fast enough. If you notice the danger ahead, and take steps to turn aside, given time… you can save an otherwise sinking ship. You CANNOT do it in one fast motion, however.
3. Heavy Lifting -
Power lifters don’t just pick up 500 lbs. on their first day of training, and you can’t just decide one day to be a different person. Going back to the diet analogy, it would be like you just quit eating altogether. Before long, you’re starving, giving in to temptation, and back to your old routine.
Okay, so if “kicking the old habits” that way isn’t the answer, then what is? I’m glad you asked…
You have to start slow, identify priorities, and follow through. You must take your time. This is not a race, and Rome wasn’t built in a day.
You Need Daily Activity, Positive Reinforcement of Your Actions, and an Organized Plan to Follow.
And I’m going to give you just that.
The solutions I’ll provide are the exact opposites of the problems listed above.
1. Self Depravation -
The focus is not on what you take away, but what you put in its place. If you have positive behavior and habit forming taking the place of a negative, there is a much bigger sense of accomplishment, as opposed to a sense of “something missing”. We want to replace habits…bad with good. It’s not just about “kicking the bad”.
2. Momentum -
Daily activity, priority lists, and a “first things first” mentality will help you to safely steer your ship away from danger. That doesn’t necessarily mean it will be slow going, but you can’t do it all in a day…you will fail. There are steps to follow. The momentum WILL shift, permanently, if you do it right.
3. Heavy Lifting -
You will not be expected to drop every habit you have all at once. That’s too much. You’ll start off a few items at a time. You must purposefully not overwhelm yourself, your willpower, your sense of accomplishment. By the end of the program, you may very well be a power lifter…but we’re going to start with a few sets of lighter weight. No hernias, please.
